Miami Lakes, Fla. (www.orangebowl.org) – The Orange Bowl supports numerous South Florida organizations and strives to provide unique opportunities for those in need. The Orange Bowl proudly served as sponsor for Make-A-Wish Southern Florida’s 5th annual Walk For Wishes® 5k Walk/Run on Saturday February 8, 2014 at Markham Park in Sunrise, FL. The goal of the event was to raise funds to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.
More than 1,300 people participated in this year, which is about 1000 more people than last year. The event raised more than $170,000. With those contributions, Make-A-Wish generated enough funds to grant the heartfelt wishes of 34 children in our local community.
"It’s an honor and a privilege to be involved with Make-A-Wish Southern Florida,” said Eric Poms, CEO of the Orange Bowl. It’s a great cause and changes lives. That’s what we’re all about, giving back to the community. "We have hosted Wish Kids at the past two Discover Orange Bowls and the 2013 Discover BCS National Championship and it's rewarding to be able to bring a little joy into their lives at such a challenging time."
Besides sponsoring Walk For Wishes®, Orange Bowl staff members participated in the 5k Walk/Run, provided snacks and beverages as well as prizes for participants and their families.
The Orange Bowl partnered with Sunshine Health, a subsidiary of Centene Corporation, at the City of Fort Lauderdale Orange Bowl Downtown Countdown on New Year's Eve to create a special graffiti wall with messages of hope and compassion for Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. The graffiti wall was presented to them at the event.
